(Leicestershire)

A haunt of the treaclejar, a nocturnal bird that gathered in flocks around the 'treacle-dips', which were holes in the ground where a sweet, watery treacle oozed to the surface. It attracted insects, birds, foxes and on Rogation Sunday, at the 'beating of
the bounds' ceremonies, the parish priest would stop at a treacle well on the boundary line- where walkers sampled the sweet waters.
